A college degree remains valuable, but employers increasingly need candidates who can apply their knowledge, solve problems and adapt to changing workplaces. The challenge is turning education into job-ready skills.

The Gap Between Education and Employment
For many young Indians, graduation is supposed to be the first step towards financial independence. Yet, completing a degree does not always translate into finding a suitable job. Employers may need practical experience and workplace skills that candidates have had limited opportunities to develop during college.
The issue is not that degrees have become useless. It is that qualifications and the ability to perform a job are not always the same thing.
What Does the Data Tell Us?
Mercer | Mettl’s India’s Graduate Skill Index 2025 reported that 42.6% of Indian graduates assessed for jobs were considered overall employable. Its findings also highlighted the importance of soft skills, including critical thinking, communication and learning agility. These findings describe the assessed candidates, not every graduate in India.
Meanwhile, India’s employment challenge extends beyond individual skills. Azim Premji University’s highlights that the growth in graduate numbers has not been matched by equivalent growth in graduate employment. This points to a broader challenge involving job creation, education and the transition from learning to earning.
